WSD’s Middle School Math Team was formed in 2011 to encourage and support academic athletes in S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).  We feel it’s important to broaden students’ experiences and perspectives in the core subject of math.  Students compete in the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) Math Competition for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. Traveling to R.I.T. also provides an opportunity to be on the campus that houses the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, exposing our students to a potential college option for their futures.  In addition, they get to meet deaf and hard-of-hearing students from around the country.

In order to participate, students must apply, take a math exam, and interview for a spot on the team. Once selected, students must be committed to practicing at least once a week for with the team coach.  As the competition approaches, the time spent in practices increases.

For more information about the competition see the NTID Website https://www.rit.edu/ntid/mathcompetition/.
