Gallaudet University and Dave Schleper

In the early 1990's, Dave Schleper of Clerc Center at Gallaudet University piloted the original Shared Reading Project (SRP) in Hawaii. The model was further refined with the support of Dr. Jane Kelleher Fernandes of Gallaudet University. Using research on how Deaf adults read to deaf children, Mr. Schleper developed fifteen basic principles of reading effectively to deaf children, and trained Deaf adults in how to work with hearing families of deaf children. These Deaf "tutors" went into families' homes once a week to teach the adults how to read a book to their deaf child, modeling reading principles and giving parents feedback as they practiced reading the book.
